Pattern requirements
Last updated: 24 September 2026
Knitglass checks every pattern written in Designer Studio before it is verified and published. A person looks at each one: the pattern, its photo and its stitch counts. Knitters trust that a Knitglass pattern was designed and knitted by a person and knits as written, and these requirements are how we keep that true.
A pattern on Knitglass
- No AI: No AI. Photos, pattern text and description are made by you, not generated or altered by AI, in whole or in part. Tidying a photo background is fine.
- Not a real sample: The photo is your own photo of a sample you knitted from this pattern. No stock, borrowed or rendered images.
- Not original: The design is yours: not copied, traced or translated from another designer, and no charts of licensed characters, logos or trademarks. Traditional motifs are fine; credit a source where one applies.
- Not a pattern: It makes a finished knitted item. A tutorial, a swatch, a materials list or a chart on its own is not a pattern.
- Incomplete: Every size is written from cast-on to finishing, its stitch counts add up, and it gives gauge, needles and yarn amounts.
- Duplicate: One pattern is one entry. Sizes and language editions belong to it, not to copies of it.
- Misleading: The title is the pattern’s name, without keywords, size lists or marketing. The photo and description match the pattern. No text on photos beyond a watermark or schematic.
- Rights: You hold the rights to the text, the charts and the photos you publish.
How a pattern is checked
When you save a pattern for review you confirm that it meets these requirements. A Knitglass verifier then reads the pattern and its stitch counts, looks at the photo and searches for it elsewhere on the web - the photo is sent to Google Cloud Vision for that search - and compares the pattern with others already on Knitglass. Tools that estimate whether text or images were made by AI are only ever supporting evidence; the decision is a person’s.
If a pattern is sent back
You receive an email saying which requirements were not met and why. Nothing is deleted: the pattern stays in your personal library, and a version already published stays published. Make the changes and save it for review again, and Knitglass will look at the new version.
Patterns containing AI-generated photos or text are treated seriously. After a rejection for AI content, every later pattern from the same account is checked with extra care, and repeated problems end the ability to create patterns.
